Briuselis pro kameros akutę

Kaip atrodo mūsų miestas šeštadienio rytą? Aktyvistų reportažas kartu su dviejų kamerų palyginimu.

Pirmieji svečiai

Kodėl yra gerai gyventi Briuselyje? Todėl kad anksčiau ar vėliau, kiekvienam čia prisireikia atvažiuoti darbo, biznio ar asmeniniais reikalais. O mums tai galimybė susitikti draugus ir gimines daug dažniau, nes Lietuvoj ar Graikijoj jie taip dažnai nesilanko. Per šias pora savaičių jau sulaukėm lankytojų iš Budapešto, Barselonos ir Kijevo.

Mes jau netgi atradom mūsų turistinį maršrutą, kuriuo praeiti turi visi, pas mus atvažiavę. 
Neminint tradicinių turistinių vietų ir pramogų, tokių kaip Belgiški vafliai, keptos bulvytės ir nuotrauka prie sisiojančio berniuko, su mumis tenka apsilankyti blusų turguj, neturistinėje pietinėje centro dalyje, Matonge kvartale, Leopoldo parke...

Prieš keletą savaičių Mikis iškepė picą pagal Jamie Oliver receptą. Pica buvo tokia skani, kad mes patys tuo negalėjom patikėti. Taigi nusprendėm, kad pica bus mūsų firminis patiekalas, kuriuo vaišinsim mūsų svečius.
Kai pas mus lankėsi Mikio brolis iš Budapešto, pagauti įkvėpimo pridarėm picų iš beveik kilogramo miltų, kurias po to valgėm kone keturias dienas. Todėl svečių meniu buvo pakoreguotas ir nuo šiol picos bus tik pagal specialų užsakymą :)

Savaitgaliniai pasivaikščiojimai Sablon rajone, kur randasi didžiulis blusų turgus, yra visuomet įdomūs ir nuotaikingi. Ten galima rasti  ne tik antikvarinių daiktų ar šiaip senų niekniekių ir šiukšlių, bet ir visokio plauko keistuolių. Šiandien padarėm išvadą, kad blusų turguj taip pat didžiausia tikimybė sutikti tikrų belgų, atėjusių apsipirkti.
Šiandien bevaikščiodami su Max'u (Miki broliu), sutikom keletą prancūzų studentų, pusryčiaujančių kavinėje po bemiegės nakties ir linksmybių Briuselyje. Apsirengę jie buvo kaip klounai ir labai aktyviai su mumis bendravo nuo gretimo staliuko. Mes aišku pasiūlėm juos nufilmuoti :-)  
Taip pat sutikom pagyvenusią moteriškę, gatvėje savo apšiurusiame kioskelyje verdančią midijų sriubą. Moteriškė buvo labai draugiška ir pasakojo mums, kaip gauna midijas iš Šiaurės jūros, kaip išimti jas iš kiauto su smeigtuku, kaip virti sriubą. Ji taip pat neprieštaravo būti fotografuojama... turbūt nesuprato, kad viso pokalbio metu mes ją filmavom dviem kamerom.
Blusų turguj mes nusipirkom taburetę gėlės vazonui ir karališkai aprengtą lėlę.

Belgija - tai ne tik Briuselis

Jau keletą metų Belgijoje gyvenantys mūsų draugai Karel ir Petar pakvietė mus savaitgalio ekskursijai į du Belgijos miestus rytinėje šalies dalyje - Hasselt ir Tongeren.
Hasselt yra maždaug už 100 kilometrų nuo Briuselio ir įsikūręs Flamandų provincijoje. Todėl visai nenuostabu, kad ten mes jautėmės kaip Olandijoje.

Diena buvo saulėta ir šilta nors jau ir pradžia lapkričio. Bevaikščiodami atradom daug smagių dalykų - ragavom įvairių skonių ledų, kavos su pienu, kuri čia vadinama lait russe (Rusiška kava), išvaikščiojom siauras gatveles, radom Mados muziejų, kurį aplankyti deja neužteko laiko.

 Visai atsitiktinai užėjom į Šiuolaikinio meno namus, kur praleidom visą pusdienį apžiūrėdami parodas "Baimės architektūra", "Išgelbėk maistą nuo supermarketų" ir pan.
"Išgelbėk maistą nuo supermarketų" yra mobili paroda apie daržoves, kurios dingsta iš rinkos ir nuo mūsų stalų. Daržovių vežimėlyje supažindina su tokiomis daržovėmis kaip patisonai, pastarnokai, gelteklės, kaliaropės, mangoldai (ar nors vienas pažįstamas?). Nors ir ne tokios populiarios, tačiau dauguma iš šių daržovių vis dar auginamos močiučių ir mamų daržuose Lietuvoje.


Tarp parodų, radom laiko pasidžiaugti auksiniu rudeniu...kai kas netgi numigo ant suoliuko.

 O tada prasidėjo mūsų menas. Ar fotografo žvilgsnis neatrodo lyg fotografuotų vaiduoklį?  :-)

 

Į Tongeren atvažiavom jau gerokai po pietų ir neturėjom daug laiko, tačiau spėjom užfiksuoti gyvą šuns statulą, akmenimis grįstas gatves, modernų Gallo-Roman muziejų, kuriam skirtas ES Metų Muziejaus titulas. Įvažiuojant į miestą iš toli matėsi įspūdinga bazilika. Be to, Tongeren yra seniausias Belgijos miestas, tai tiesiog pati geriausia vieta pradėti pažintį šalį...

Guests are coming to town!

The good thing about living in Brussels is that it is a place where sooner or later everybody has some business to do, meetings to attend, people to meet. And for us its a chance to meet friends and relatives cause to Belgium they come over more often than to Lithuania or Greece. So far we had visitors from Budapest, Barcelona and Kiev. 

We have even developed our small city tour which is a must for everyone coming to visit us. 

Not mentioning the usual turistic do's such as Belgian waffles, frites and photo with a pissing boy, we go to flea market, non turistic parts in the south of the center, Matonge, Leopold park...

A few weeks ago Miki made a pizza a la Jamie Oliver which was outrageously good that we thought we've found a special dish to please our guests. So, with a great enthusiasm when Miki's brother was visiting us, we made pizzas of almost a kilo of flour, which we then ate for almost 4 days! :-) From now on there are changes on guests menu, but the lucky ones can still qualify for the most delicious pizza ever!

Weekend walks in Sablon area where you can find a huge flea market are always interesting and curious. One can find there not only antique items but also all kind of weirdos. By the way, today we came up with the conclusion that the flea market is the place to see real Belgians coming to shop :-)
Today when walking around with Max, we met a bunch of wasted French students having late breakfast in a cafe after a sleepless partying night in Brussels. 
And an old lady, cooking the mussels soup in the street - her little kiosk looked a bit shabby, but the woman was very friendly. She told us the mussels are coming from the North Sea and showed us how to take them out of their shell with a pin. She also didn't mind being photographed... cause she didn't really realise we were filming her all the time with 2 cameras.
We bought a royally dressed doll and a stool for a flower pot.

 

 

We also like the guests who like funny experiments with camera ;-)

 

Belgium is not only Brussels

Having in lived in Belgium for several years, our friends Karel and Petar invited us for a weekend trip to explore two towns in the East of Belgium - Hasselt and Tongeren.
Hasselt is situated around 100 kms from Brussels in Flemish province. No wonder the architecture and the atmosphere made us feel as if we were in Holland.

The day was sunny and warm for the beginning of November, so we enjoyed walking, and small discoveries - flavoured ice cream, lait russe (this is a belgian way to call caffe latte and it means "Russian coffee"), lovely cafes in the square, fashion museum (which unfortunately we had no time to visit).

 Great success was finding House of the temporary art in Hasselt where we spent half a day seeing the displays Architecture of Fear, Save Food From Super Market and others. 
Save Food From Super Market is a mobile exhibition on locally disappearing vegetables where they promote vegies such as purslane, pattypansquash, parsnip, scorzonera, kohlrabi, chard (any familiar names?). Although, for Lithuanians these vegetables are known good enough and are grown in grandmothers' gardens!


Between visiting the exhibitions, we enjoyed ths golden autumn in the yard...some even slept there.

To Tongeren we arrived late afternoon and unfortunately didn't have much time to get to know it better. But we captured a dog statue (live!), cobblestone streets and modern building of Gallo-Roman museum awarded as EU Museum of the Year! Also the Basilica looked gorgeous as we entered the town.

Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium, so it's a right place to start getting to know the country..

Jau prabėgo pusantro mėnesio mūsų belgiško gyvenimo. Taip greit! Neskaitant kassavaitinių rutinų, kurias jau spėjom sau susikurti, ar kada nors susidraugausim su šiuo miestu? Taigi ir toliau tyrinėjam - bevaikščiodami, ant dviračio ar skaitydami kitų migrantų dienoraščius (blog'us).

Praėjusio sekmadienio popietę aplankėm Bois de la Cambre - didžiulį parką Briuselio pietinėje dalyje. Smagiausia, kad eismas aplink parką savaitgaliais yra uždarytas, todėl parkas ir aplinkinės gatvės prisipildo vaikų ant riedučių ar dviratukų ir suaugusiųjų žaidžiančių gatvės ritulį. Neskaitant galybės bėgiojančių, besimankštinančių, vaikštančių, piešiančių, vežiojančių vaikus, fotografuojančių, važinėjančių dviračiais ir skaitančių knygas, matėm ir mažą voverę, kurią netgi spėjom nufotografuot :) dar prisirinkom kaštonų rudeniniams namų papuošimams.

Kas savaitę pastebim kokių nors naujų dalykų apie vietinį gyvenimą. Pvz., įlipus į metro ar autobusą, kiekvienas tvarkingai pasižymi savo bilietą, nors per visas šešias savaites nė karto nematėm kontrolės (būtų taip Lietuvoj... :-)
Palyginus su Olandija, gatvėse pakankamai mažai dviratininkų - gal dėl to, kad visuomeninis transportas pakankamai išplėtotas ir patogus naudoti. Kaip ten bebūtų, aš nuo šios savaitės jau visur lekiu su dviračiu!

Patys svarbiausi mūsų atradimai kolkas yra šie:
rusiškas supermarketas, kuriame galima nusipirkti Lašų duonos iš Rokiškio :)

 ir Cinematek kino teatras, kurie rodo visokį neformatą, ir šiaip šiek tiek panašus į Pasakos kino teatrą.

Šią savaitę jau labai pasiilgom savo draugų! Visiems, kurie išvažiuojant žadėjo mus aplankyti Europos sostinėj, jau laikas pirkti bilietus! ;-)

cafe in the neighbourhood

It's been 6 weeks since we arrived. Time flies! Besides the weekly routines that we've built for ourselves, will this city ever become our friend? So, we keep exploring on foot, bikes and reading blogs of other expats.

Last weekend we visited Bois de la Cambre - huge park in the south of Brussels. On weekends the traffic in surrouding streets is closed but occupied by kids riding roller skates and bikes or adults playing roller hockey. Besides joggers, walkers, painters, couples with kids, photo-shooters and bikers, we photographed a squirrel :) and collected some chestnuts for decorations.

When looking closer, there are many interesting things about the city - everybody politely punches a ticket in a bus or tram, although we have never seen a controller, there are rather few bikers in the city (if compared to the Netherlands), perhaps because of well organized public transport.

The greatest discoveries we've made so far are:

the russian supermarket selling dark brown lithuanian bread from Rokiskis, 

and Cinematek where they play classic and non-format films, plus its cheap and walking distance from our home!

This week we miss our friends! All those who have promised to visit us in the capital of Europe, it's time to book your tickets! ;-)

Home sweet home!

It took us almost two weeks to create a  home we wanted. The home that is  functioning for sleeping, eating, working,   resting and even hosting guests!

At first there was nothing...  But then Bence arrived with piles of wood, tools and noise making instruments. Since then the bedroom was occupied for cutting, grinding, glueing, hammering and drilling...

Since our plan of having dark wood coffee table designed for us by Ben didn't work out, we looked for creative opportunities.. Finally our coffee table is getting in shape - authentic and definitely one and only!

Works continued for more than a week, no matter which hour. If painted at 2 o'clock in the night,  the desk will be ready at 10 in the morning  when we wake up! That's called a good planning! :)         The most shocking moment was  when Ben decided  to cut a piece of wood at exactly midnight hour :D The neighbours knocked on a wall only once! :P

Ben meditating after a long day :-)      We don't have a balcony here but in the warm autumn evenings the windows with wide window sills are inviting.

From time to time Miki came out of his kitchen corner bureau... In the meantime he edited his new video about volunteers!

The last items - bed tables will soon be ready! On the list of the furniture already made we have bed, closet, shoes shelf, book shelves, desk, editing station, hall shelf, coffee table, coat hanger...

The piece of art - this was constructed of the leftovers of pine wood we had and the legs of an old table, which Ben had found in a street. Looks elegant!

Some creativity in the hall - costed almost nothing! Made of the same wooden pallet as the coffee table.

Our new working desk... yet empty... One day later was filled with papers, books, computers. Yet only an office chair is missing!

This is how our working area in the living room looks like.. On the opposite side of the room we have a couch which is waiting for the visitors! ;-)

The saying says home is where the heart is..  And ours is now here!
